Need Clarification on Rebate

Postby GEO-Cache-N-Release » Sun Nov 23, 2008 2:59 pm

I downloaded the rebate form from the REI site. The form is a Delorme offer and does not reference any specific retailers. Is this rebate valid with the already discounted on-line retailers such as Tiger GPS, J&R, and Amazon? With these retailers offering as low as $339 does that mean $289 with rebate? There is nothing about the rebate form that indicates a discounted purchase would not be valid although there is no reference to the rebate at the discounted retailers' sites.

Thanks, Glenn.

The rebate is offered to customers who purchase the PN-series devices at at a "brick and mortar" retail location, or it's online branch (think REI and REI.com). A partial list of Authorized Stores include: REI, Cabela's, LL Bean, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shops, Campmor, Eastern Mountain Sports, Forestry Suppliers, Hamilton Marine, Jax Outdoor Inc, Kittery Trading Post, Mapsco, Mills Fleet Farm, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Sportsman's Warehouse, Sports Authority, & Wide World of Maps.

Resellers that are "web-only" like Amazon, TigerGPS, and others that are already offering prices below MSRP on the PN-40 are not eligible for the rebate.

Basically if you purchased the PN-series device at a price below MSRP ($249.95 for PN-20 and $399.95 for PN-40) you are not eligible for the $50 mail in rebate as well.

I hope that this helps.

Brian, did you mean $399.95 for the PN-40? That's what REI seems to have it for right now.

I did mean $399.95. Thanks! I edited my post above to reflect the correct price. I blame this on the fact that it is Monday and I was out of coffee at home this morning.

Is this rebate available if we purchased direct from Delorme at MSRP?

Thanks,

I'm sorry but the rebate doesn't state any of those exclusions at all!

Where are you getting this from? Business practices like this is exactly the kind of thing that will give you a black mark in the eye of the consumer. With the economy the way it is you can't afford to alienate your loyal customers. I bought from on an online retailer thinking I could use the coupon. If I would have known that coupon had hidden exclusions I would have waited. This is just bad business and I'm considering returning my GPS just on principle.

I agree. When I buy something online, like from buy.com, with a rebate, I download the rebate form (PDF) right from them (buy.com). Then if there is an issue with the rebate not being fulfilled, back it goes.

I will not tolerate that and one time returned System Mechanic for full refund to buy.com when the rebate form from their website did not match.

Here is a link to my comment (after I cleaned it up) on a belated rebate rejection by postcard that I received earlier this year from Phoenix, AZ,. The purchase was made in a Fry's brick and mortar store in Austin, and the rebate was printed out with the sales receipt.

In defense of Delorme, I think that rebate form is offered through the REI site (correct me if wrong; that's the only place I saw it). Was the order through REI?

Yep, that's not explicitly on the rebate form and it leaves room for misunderstandings. To the extent that the rebate form is a contract, it's good to have all the relevant details in there so no expectations are raised that can't be satisfied.

Delorme (or maybe REI) may have been a little careless in rolling out the rebate forms, but I don't think they were being deceptive.

No, the rebate is not available for PN-series devices purchased directly from DeLorme.

Brian, could you provide some clarification about the rebate?

On the GPSDeals website they list online retailers as participating in the rebate and say this info came from DeLorme. The rebate was also mentioned by the author of the GPS Review website in the comments section (#62 and #64) of his PN-40 review and said he thought it applied at any authorized dealer. I'll provide links in a following post (the forum software says I need at least one post before posting URLs).

Granted, the only rebate form I have seen is the one posted on REI's website.

OK, here's the link to GPSDeals. And here's the link to the PN-40 review on GPS Review where comments #62 and #64 mention the rebate. Maybe you can see how I'm finding the info a bit conflicting at the moment.

I reviewed a copy of the form and any reasonable person would believe there are NO restrictions on the "location" of purchase or "price paid" after reading the form.

Brian, did Legal approve this form?

All,

We apologize for any confusion about our rebate offer. We had assumed that by having a rebate form .pdf print out directly from a specific store's website that a customer would assume that the offer was exclusive to that site/store. We are going to correct this post haste. Here is a link to an exact list of approved retailers: www.delorme.com/pnrebate/. We also had online discount retailers who were offering the rebate on top of a discounted price when they were not authorized to do so. We have contacted the parties responsible and the situation should be remedied shortly.

In our defense, the actual rebate pads that shipped out to retail stores had the language of "offer only valid at authorized retailers" printed on them. This language was mistakenly left out on the .pdf forms that were sent out to online retailers. We are currently updating those files and hopefully the online retailers will be hosting the new form by the end of the day. The post on GPSdeals.com will be updated with the correct list as well. Both GPSDeals.com and the comments on GPSreview.net point to the rebate for hosted by REI.com. When REI.com updates their form both sites will link to the updated form. As for J&R, while they are, in fact, brick and mortar, they are selling at a discounted price and therefore are not eligible for the rebate. We hope that this will clear up any confusion.

It was certainly not our intention to mislead our customers, this one just slipped through the cracks. Again, we apologize for any confusion or ill feelings towards DeLorme that this has caused.

Thank you,

Brian
